A positive force in the fields of Emerging Media, Academia, Business, the Arts, and Advocacy.

Bio

I am a dedicated educator and academic administrator, experienced consultant and entrepreneur, internationally exhibited artist and maker, and advocate committed to social justice. I am open to unique opportunities across disciplines and the globe.

I am currently an Assistant Arts Professor at NYU Shanghai, where I co-founded Interactive Media Arts (IMA) and founded Interactive Media + Business (IMB). IMA and IMB are the first undergraduate counterparts of NYU Tisch School of the Arts graduate level Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP). I served as Assistant Dean for Emerging Media between 2016 and 2019. In recognition of my numerous contributions to the NYU Global Network, including my ongoing work to make NYU a more inclusive and equitable academic environment, I was awarded a cross-appointment with New York University in 2015.

My personal research and practice often explores empathy through the medium of participation. My art has been experienced at major venues, including The New York Public Library and Kidspace @ MASS MoCA, and has been featured across various media, including The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes, The Boston Globe, El País, Boing Boing, and MobuzzTV.

I have also worked on a broad range of professional projects including visual, interaction and user experience design, rapid hardware and software prototyping, development for desktop, web, and mobile applications and games, video and photo production and post-production, as well as advertising, marketing and social media strategy for major companies through my consultancy, FatBits LLC.

Previously, I was an Assistant Professor of Media Arts & Technology at BMCC, City University of New York. I was also Co-Founder and Co-Director of Greylock Arts, an organization based in western Massachusetts with a mission to facilitate a deeper public appreciation for emerging arts practice through exhibitions, events, and educational programing.

My approach to everything embodies many of the ideals of the STEAM, Maker, and Open Source movements including; community building and engagement, broad interdisciplinary methods, an open practice, and the DIY ethic.

I hold a Master of Professional Studies from ITP and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Art Institute of Boston / Lesley University College of Art and Design.

"Matt has been instrumental in the creation, operation and growth of the remarkable Interactive Media Arts program at NYU Shanghai. This program is easily one of the most interesting undergraduate new media arts programs in the world in its scope and depth. Matt does an amazing job of steering it through some of the most interesting new territory while keeping core competencies in focus. And all of this is being done in the exciting and complex environment of NYU in Shanghai. The situation of the university is unique and the realization of the global university ideal is actually happening. Matt is able to respond to the local conditions and opportunities with the aims of the program in balance."

Cindy Hu

Cindy Hu, Associate Fellow of Interactive Media Arts at NYU Shanghai, current colleague and former student

"As Matt's former student, I always remember how he put in tremendous efforts in making himself as available to us as possible, staying late in the studio helping students with our questions and giving us advice on bigger questions beyond the classroom. He has managed to cultivate a welcoming and loving environment in the Interactive Media Arts program and worked hard to make sure that it stays this way throughout the years. His dedication to the students and the program is truly remarkable."

"At the time that Matthew and I worked together, we were constantly being challenged by our client to push the boundaries of what was possible. Matthew was always willing to go the extra mile and we came to rely on him heavily for his technological experience and expertise. Matthew is a benefit to any organization and I highly recommend bringing him onboard."

"Matthew and I worked together at the Borough of Manhattan Community College at City University of New York. He was an excellent teacher, I had the chance to observe him and his lectures and labs were lively, well-organized and thorough. He was devoted to his students; he typically stayed in the classroom well past class time to help them with their work. Matt was exceptional as a colleague as well; we served on some committees together and he was a pleasure to work with. Matt was always ready with ideas for developing curriculum and finding new ways to ensure that our students were learning the material. I recommend Matthew most highly."

"Matt is one of the most dedicated professors and administrators I have ever worked with. He also cares a lot about his students. When I was an academic advisor for the Interactive Media Arts major, he would come by my office often to discuss collaboration on supporting our students. I also had the opportunity to sit in on his “Developing Web” class for one semester and I learned a lot about the field of art and technology. He is absolutely wonderful to work with and there is so much I can learn from him!"

"Matt has worked with Practica as a freelance video editor for many years and it has been Practica's good fortune that he has done so. Matt truly brings a rare and wonderful mix of creativity and technical skills infused with enthusiasm, perfectionism and calm. He is amazing to work with, he has often left me shaking my head in awe as to how he manages to craft such fine and precise video gems amidst the short, and highly pressurized, time frames of our milieu. In addition Matt is a highly skilled web developer. He recently produced a web platform for Practica to facilitate our research. Matt's mix of capabilities and personality make him an unbeatable colleague."
